Christmas is almost here! I can't wait to get my presents, but it's important to give other people presents too. I love to sew so I'm making bags for some of my family. I'm not very good at sewing, but it doesn't matter. Just try your best. I'm making a glasses bag that says Boston on it, a little baggy for anything for my sister, and a bookmark for my mom. Everything is handmade. Sometimes that's okay, the best present is something make by yourself. I said I can't wait to get my present too, right? That's okay too. I want anything. I'm happy with whatever someone gives me. Besides, they are nice enough to even give you something. You should be happy that someone cares enough. What do you want, what are you giving, would a handmade present be good enough for you?

Let's Say Thanks
With my brother being deployed overseas and it being close to the holidays, there has never been a better time to send a message of "thanks" to the U.S. troops serving our country. They are so far away from their homes and loved ones, and all to protect us and our right to freedom. Please take a moment to send a message to our troops to show that we are grateful for their sacrifice. To show that we thank them for their courage and wish them a safe and quick return home. Think of the spirits you could lift by taking a few moments of your day.

I collect many things including state quarters and other special coins. My collection of coins include 45 different state quarters, a Washington D.C. quarter, a United States of America quarter (drummer boy one) ,and 3 dollar coins. I still need to find the state quarters of Arizona, Texas, Colorado , South Dakota ,and Minnesota. I also want to find other US territory coins like the Guam quarter. The US territory coins were all released in 2009 so they are rather hard to find in circulation. I heard that there is now a first wife dollar coin program! I found out that a good way to collect state quarters is to go to a dollar to quarters machine and put in 5 dollars and see how many special quarters the machine dispenses. I get my state quarters and nickles by, asking my parents if I can look at their change, using dollar to quarters machines, buying some from my sisters, and asking cashier to turn a dollar into change. I got my dollar coins from a Washington D.C. subway ticket buying machine who gave out dollar coins as change. What things do you collect?

On the 18th of September, I went to Hollywood to visit my mom’s cousin. His name is Varun. He had an accident during a basketball game. While he was running, his knee bent backward instead of forward, causing the anterior cruciate ligament, also called the ACL (which is one of the four major ligaments of the knee) to tear. It is the most used ligament in the body.
Hollywood was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We went to the star walk, where there are a bunch of stars on the sidewalk, and there was the name of a movie star on each star. Since Michael Jackson had died recently, people were putting flowers on his star.
We then went to the new wax museum. One of the statues was actually President Obama! The statues looked so real, that I couldn’t even tell them apart from the actual people. I can’t believe that people could actually make them!
There was also a place in the wax museum where you actually make your own hand. You dip your hand in wax, take it out, dip it in color, and remove the coating of wax. The coating of wax is your hand.
My favorite wax statue was Shrek. He was bent over, and was making a fist. Even when he was bent over, he was at least twice the size of my dad!
There was also a statue of Michael Jackson. He was on the stage, with his hand out in front of him. There was a man who takes pictures of you and sends them to the front desk.
There was also Spider-Man. There was another man who takes pictures of you there and sends them to the front desk. The only difference is that he takes pictures of you upside-down! That way, it looks like you are hanging upside-down. There are also some upside-down pictures of buildings, so when you take a picture of someone with the pictures in the background, they look like windows.
There was also another place where there is a video camera that they use faux movies, and there was a wax statue with a painted background. It looked artificial through the naked eye, but through the camera, it looks real. So when you are watching a movie, the background may not always be real-it may be painted.
I did not want to leave, but I guess I had to. What recent vacations did you go on?

Indian dress that was green and red. We hit the road and were on the way to my friend’s house. Everyone did programs that we practiced for several weeks. I made a movie by interviewing my friends to ask them what they thought about Diwali. I danced for two Indian songs. I sang one prayer song and one classical music song. Bursting firecrackers were awesome. We burst some that went in circles on a stem. It looked like sparkles flying all around the stem. That was what I did for Diwali. What is one festival you like to celebrate? What is special about that function?

There are many wonders in this world, but my favorite thing about it is watching the stars, making things, and animals. When your in America, the stars are numerous and make the sky even more beautiful than it is without it. The stars light up the sky and make you feel better even though it doesn't even say anything. Stars are peaceful and seem to reach out to you. Another reason I like them is because I'm a Christian, and a story in the bible said that a star guided men to where Jesus was born even though Satan made it shine, but then an angel made them go another way so they wouldn't obey Satan. It shows the power of God. Sometimes when I'm bored while on the grass with flowers all over the place, I make a necklace or bracelet, but sometimes there's not a lot of flowers so I make rings. You poke in near the end of the stem and make a hole, but don't make a hole that's too big! Then you put another flower through it until you want to stop. Lastly, I like animals, but not the ones that could hurt you, like snakes. Two times this year, pigeons laid eggs in a broken lamp because the shape is perfect for a nest! My family actually saw the baby birds grow up! Now they have their own little babies, but they don't visit often because a cat is there. The cat plays with them until they are too tired and leave them there to die. Isn't that cruel? One of their little babies was hurt very badly, so we took it in and fed it food and gave it water, but the next morning, it was dead! That's when the pigeons stopped coming as often, and I was sad and wished that the little bird's friends forgave us. I wish that next year birds would lay eggs again! What are the things that you like on this earth and why?

What is your favorite book? My favorite book is The Tale Of Despereaux. I like it because it has many interesting characters like Despereaux the big-eared mouse and a mouse that puts on make-up named Antoinette. The Tale Of Despereaux is filled with funny events. The movie is totally different from the book. I think the book is better than the movie because it encourages me to read on. However, in the movie you can see the real events which is good too. I would like to know your favorite book and why it is your favorite. Be sure to be specific!!!

Murdock-Portal Fall Family Fun Night was last Saturday and it was so exiting. There were so many games to play and so much food to enjoy.
The first game I chose to played was Biggest Number because my friend, Amy, and her dad volunteered for that. There was a slanted board with slots labeled with numbers 1, 2, and 3. I got three balls and tried to roll into a slot with the 3, the biggest number. I did not get the biggest number but I got an interesting one. I got the numbers 1, 2 , and 3!
Then I went to the Cake Walk. The game was so popular! There were so many people I almost didn't get spot! When I got in, Mr. Roels was playing too. When the music stopped, Mr. Roels was standing on the letter Q. He started chanting " Q Q Q Q." Then the game organizer pulled out the letter and it was Q!! I played 2 times but did not get anything! How lucky he was.
My sister, Emily, came to Family Fun Night too. She didn't come to play. She came because she volunteered. Emily is a freshman in high school and graduated from Portal. She was there to help her elementary school. Her game was Amaze-O. Lots of people came to play that my sister ran out of prizes!
While I was playing, I saw people getting plates of food. My mouth started watering and my tummy started growling. I went to the picnic area and saw many varieties of food. There were American, Chinese, Indian, and Japanese food. The choices of desserts were endless! Cakes, cookies, brownies, and cupcakes you name it!
Time passed so fast. Before I knew it, The event ended and I had to go home. I left with a full stomach, a head full of memories, and a smile on my face. I am looking forward to the next Family Fun Night. What did you do at Family Fun Night? If you didn't go, what are you looking forward to doing at the next Family Fun Night?

Hey kids! Do you feel like homework takes your entire day? Do you think you have little time to play? Then go to school to get this great offer! This offer is for a limited time. This week is conference week. I like it because I have more time to play in my front or backyard. Today I played dodge ball with my sister. I also sometimes play inside with my brother or sister. I have more opportunities to go to my friends' house. It's great because you can get your homework done early, so you're not stressed when dinner comes. What do you like about conference week and why?

This summer I went to Hawaii for summer.
Hawaii is a beautiful island, but sometimes it can be dangerous too. Volcano's burst lava out of their tops. It makes a big explosions and burn mostly anything. The island can also be peaceful. You can walk down the street and feel the warm breeze pushing on you. Then suddenly you could see the beautiful beach scenery. In beaches and bays you can see different types of sea animals. I have experience snorkeling, so I got to see lots of see animals (some scary ones too). If global warming does not stop all the sea animals would die.
If you went to Hawaii what would you do?

Hello everybody! The two people you are looking at the right are my two heros. They are very important to me because they teach me many things when I am in the middle of a tornament. One important thing that I learn from them is how they do all the moves. When I was in Texas it was not much of a fight. When I went to Las Vegas, Nevada there were plenty of fights over there. The only reason there were about a 1,500 competitors. Some other things I would usally learn from my brother. Some other things I learned about them is movement and timing for sparring this way I won sparring in the JUNIOR OLYMPICS gold medal. That medal means a lot to me especilly when I am wearing it. So who is your hero and why do you think they are the best?

What did you do over the summer? What were your adventures? Well, I went to Orange County,Los Angeles. We went on Friday and came back on Sunday. When we got there, I checked my hotel, Holiday Inn. The hotel was really fancy and had a gym. my friends and I played in the gym and later went swimming. On Saturday, I woke up at 7:00am and went to a hotel for an abacus competition. We went there for a competition. I won two 5th places, one 4th place, and one 3rd place. After, we went to Home-Town Buffet to eat. Later, we went window shopping. On Sunday, I went to Knott's Berry Farm. The rides were so scary! Especially the Sliver Bullet and Ghost rider. I had a lot of fun adventures there. I hope to find out what adventures you had. |

Have you ever done something incredible where people ask you how you do it and you just say that you were born to do it? I think every single person in the world has a special talent. I can solve the Rubik's cube and people ask me how I do it. You could be double jointed, spell a super long word, or even say a super long tongue twister amazingly fast. I want to know everybody's talents and how they do them. One thing I found out is that when you see something super cool and try to do it, it is really hard to do it. What are your special talents that are superb? Why do you think certain people can do their talents?

Subjects & Predicates
Every sentence has a predicate too. It tells what the subject is or does. The complete predicate includes all the words in the predicate, and the simple predicate is the main word or words in the complete predicate.
Create 3 of your own sentences. Write the simple subject and predicate after each sentence in parenthesis. Feel free to make corrections/suggestions about other sentences submitted if you do not agree.
ex: Students of Portal Elementary School treat their classmates with respect. (students/treat)

My Soccer Tournament
By: Nandini
This weekend, I had a D2 Cup. My team, Surefire is a very cooperative team. We get a lot done and still have fun! We got first place in the whole entire district but, we won second place in the D2 tournament. We played four games and I played up to my potential for every game except the third game. The thing was that I was really sick for that game. At least I didn’t let any goals in.
The thing that splits competitive soccer teams apart is the “classes.” There is class one and class three (class one is better). My team is in class three but, next season we will be going into a class one team. We played against class one players so, it was a good accomplishment for our team. I saw many of the players in my old team which brought back memories. Sad ones and happy ones. Then, I got back to Earth and started focusing on the game!
Overall, my coach is very proud of us and he congratulates us for the work we put in to make our ranking so high. Next time, we plan working harder but, we still aren’t disappointed since we were the “underdogs” as our coach said.

If you were the president of the United States like Barack Obama what would you do? If I was president of the United States I would help to support education by giving money to schools all around the nation. Also, I wouldn’t let any government official to take the money away from schools to fix the economy.
Next, I would try to get all the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq and South Korea back home because we are putting to many soldier’s lives in danger. In addition, there are other ways of dealing with different countries rather than going to war with them. I would try to make peace with other countries so we won’t get in to any wars.
Also, right now we are in an economy crisis. If I were president I would fix the economy by launching another 800 billion recovery package to get more money into people’s pay check and so businesses can stop laying off more people and people can buy more from stores so businesses wouldn’t shut down.
One more thing I would try to do is to build more homeless shelters so homeless people will have a place to stay. That’s what I would do if I were the president of the United States. What would you do if you were president of the United States?

Summer is approaching and school will end. Half of our class will leave to middle school. And we will have more time to do chores! That's enough with the terrible thoughts. I will now start the good news. You probably have some great plans for the summer. I think summer time is the best part of the year because it is the only time of the year you get to relax and do what ever you want. I'm going to the Sierra Nevada to climb some mountains with my friend. We have a family cabin that we share with our relatives. There is a stream that runs near it and we like to make dams there. If you have nothing to do, you'd better have some good relaxing plans. What are you going to do over the summer?

Do any of you have a favorite sport? Well, my favorite sport is swimming! I started swimming when I was pretty young. I used to go to DACA and my dad used to get in the pool with me. I still remember that I didn't really like swimming that time. As I grew older I continued to go to DACA maybe till I was six or seven years old. I liked then as I actually knew the strokes and could swim well. I stopped because we were going to India for a vacation.
After we came back I kept on asking my parents if they could put me in swimming classes again. Then they finally put me in swimming classes. As our whole family was a member in YMCA and they had swimming classes there, my dad joined me in there. I still go there right now. The days I go are Tuesday and Thursday each week. My class is 45 minutes long. Now I like YMCA better than DACA classes. After each session ends I get to know what level I am in then my mom enrolls me again.
What is your favorite sport and when did you start it? Do you take classes for it?
