Falling Satellite!
By: Niraj
Did you hear about the satellite that fell back to Earth last Friday, the 23rd of September? This was an old satellite of NASA called Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). It was launched in 1991 and was in use till 2005. The satellite weighed 13000 pounds! When the news about the satellite's falling became known, many people panicked. However, NASA reassured everyone that there was one in 3,200 chance of it hitting any object on earth. Most of the satellite was expected to burn before reaching the earth.

NASA's predictions were correct. The satellite broke into pieces during re-entry, and most of it up burned in the atmosphere. Twenty-six parts, weighing about 1,200 pounds, may have reached the surface of Earth. The satellite entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean, far from any major land. NASA has not found any debris so far.

When my mom was in school, the Skylab space station fell down to earth. Skylab was about the size of a house and was much bigger than UARS. Many people(including my mom) were worried that the satellite would fall on them. When bits of Skylab fell in western Australia, no one was injured but the local authorities did fine NASA $400 for littering.

How would you feel if you found a piece of Space Debris?

I would be very excited if I found some Space Debris! If I did find a piece, I would give most of it to N.A.S.A. and ask them if I could keep a little bit of it. I would keep the little piece in my room forever. When I die I would give it to my children. Also, my sister's birthday was on September 23rd. What if she found it on her birthday? I'll ask her what she would do.

If I found a piece of Space Debris, and I didn't find it because it hit me on the head, I would be very excited. It wasn't every dat that you found a piece of Sape Debris. It was something that fell out of space! I would want to keep it for myself. If it fell on me, i would'nt be as happy. It is very possible for it to hurt you if it does'nt burn up in the sky. i really hope I find one if it does'nt hit me on the head!

Nice post Niraj! I heard about the satellite on Yahoo then heard it on the news. If I found a piece of Space Debris I would have screamed holey! Then I would call authorities if I had a phone. The UARS also traveled about five miles per second! No wonder the satellite burned. Over all, you explained about the satellite very well.

If I found a piece of Space Debris, I'll give it to my dad. Fifth graders, you know why. Nice post Niraj!

If I found a piece of Space Debris, I would keep it for my whole life, if NASA allowed me to. I would keep it in a jar, and make sure no one would touch it. Or I would donate it to a space museum to let other people see for a while, then get it back.If the piece of Space Debris hit my head, I would not be that happy. I would probably be very surprised if it hit my head. Fabulous post Niraj! (:

If found a piece of debris I would overjoyed! I mean, I just found a piece of history! When I am older I would show it to them. Tell the story and pass it down generations! All remembering of me! Great post!
