Naren's Post

The Amish People
By: Naren
The Amish were best known for simple living, plain dress, and have learnt to avoid many conveniences of modern technology. Their population was 249,000, and their founder was Jakob Ammann. They lived in United States (notably Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and New York) and Canada (notably Ontario).  Their religion was Anabaptist, and their languages were Pennsylvania German, Swiss German, and English.
Their founder was Jakob Ammann was born in 1656, in Erlenbach im Simmental, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, but later moved to Alsace as part of an emigration pack of Anabaptist. His exact date of birth is unknown. Some believe he was born on February 12, 1644 to Michael and Anna Rupp Ammann of Erlenbach, but it is uncertain.   On February 27, 1696 he signed a petition against compulsory military service. He was probably leader of that until his death. Ammann’s date of death is also unknown, though it might have happened after 1708 and before 1730. His life is a mystery but we know that he was the founder of the Amish.
The Amish are afraid to any technology which they feel weakens the family structure. The conveniences that the rest of us take are electricity, television, automobiles, telephones and tractors are considered to be a temptation that could create inequality or lead the Amish away from their close-knit community. Most Amish cut their fields with horse-drawn machinery, live in houses without electricity, and get around in horse-powered buggies. It is common for Amish communities to allow the use of telephones, but not in the home. Instead, several Amish families will share a telephone in a wooden cabin between farms. Electricity is sometimes used in certain situations, such as electric fences for cattle, flashing electric lights on buggies, and heating homes. Windmills are often used as a source of naturally generated electricity. It is also not unusual to see Amish using such 20th-century technologies as inline skates, disposable diapers and gas barbecue grills, because they are not prohibited to use them.

Amish lifestyle is lead by the order, which differs slightly from community to community, and, within a community, from district to district. What is allowed in one community may not be allowed in another. No summary of Amish lifestyle and culture can be totally fair, because there are few generalities that are true for all Amish. Groups may separate over matters such as the width of a hat, the color of buggies, or various other issues.

It is difficult to  put an  estimatr of their population, but rough estimates from various studies have placed their numbers at 125,000 in 1992, 166,000 in 2000, and 221,000 in 2008, for a growth rate of nearly 4% per year. From 1992 to 2008, population growth among the Amish in North America was 84%. During that time they established 184 new settlements and moved into six new states.  In 2000, approximately 165,620 Old Order Amish resided in the United States, of which 73,609 were church members. The Amish are among the fastest-growing populations in the world, with an average of 6.8 children per family.
As time has passed, the Amish have felt annoyed by the modern world. Issues such as taxation, education, law and its enforcement, and occasional discrimination and hostility, are areas of difficulty. Amish have thrived in their non-mechanic world. Their success has lasted a long time and it still last today. Would you want to live a lifestyle similar to the Amish? Why or why not?

Fantastic blog post Naren! It seems that you are very interested in the Amish People. I would like to have a similar lifestyle to them because it would be cool to ride in electric buggies. On the other hand, I like to use technology. I can't imagine no laptops, cell phones, or other electronics! It seems that we are very high tech compared to the Amish. I learned a lot about the Amish and their habits! :D

Is this about your Essay that you told us about in Social studies? Haha! I'm joking. nice post, but I think that living with the Amish or as an Amish, would be very simple with very little stress. Also, as you explained, there isn't any technology in the family. That means that my mom and brother, who are always on the computer, can spend some time with me. I think that living with the Amish would be peaceful.

I think that I wouldn't want to live like the Amish people because I enjoy using modern technology. At first I thought it would be fun to be like the Amish people, but then I thought about it some more and I don't think I would like it. It seems like life goes kind of slow for the Amish people and I don't think I would like that.

I would not want to live like the Amish people because they do really plain things. They sound like very boring people to me. If I were one of the Amish people I would feel really bored.

Dear Naren, I would not like a lifestyle like the Amish people because they are not allowed to use technology. How can I watch LeBron James and the Heat in the NBA against other teams without buying tickets to the game? How can anybody play computer games? I cannot live the way the Amish people do. By the way I found a spelling mistake. Instead of writing estimate you wrote estimatr.

No, I would not want to live a life similar to the Amish people. First, I like to watch TV and play computer games. Second, I cannot imagine myself working on a farm. Third, I need to use cars to go to different places. And finally, could you really live without air conditioners and heaters? As you can see, I wouldn't really want to live like the Amish people.

No, because I can't live without video games, T.V., and computers but not using anything that is powered by electricity would help the earth, like going green or conserving energy.

Great post, Naren! I wouldn't want to live the same lifestyle as the Amish. I wouldn't live their lifestyle because I if don't use technology, I wouldn't know how to use new technology. Did you hear about the iPhone 5? The rumor started because someone found a prototype of the iPhone 5 because an apple employee forgot to put it back. There is only one why I would want to live the Amish life and that is because they take very good care of the environment. Instead of spending all their time on the computer, they go out spend their time outside. In conclusion I would not like to live like the Amish people even though I admire how to take care of nature.

I would not want to live simply like the Amish people because think about we grew in Silicon Valley were many electronics are made. Without electricity life would be so much harder. People can find information faster using the internet instead of going to maybe a library. I think it would be easy to use cars instead of horse. For one cars are easy to steer. Imagine life without computers video games what will we have for entertainment. We may not needs these things but they are helpful in many ways.

Great post Naren! I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into it. I think for me, growing up with all the new technology makes a modern life irresistable and exiting. If I had grown up with surroundings that were simple like the Amish, perhaps I would want to keep my life basic. However, I still think that there are a few drawbacks to living in an Amish society. I mean, it makes since how you would want to keep a family close, but you cannot really invent or use creativity to make things easier.

I might becuase it is something different. Sometimes I get bored of doing the same things over and over again. Exept that if I didn't live a life like this right now and lived like a Amish person, I would want to see what it would be like to live with electricity. I conclude that it is a tricky queestion and I can not answer it that I would like to live my whole life with no electricity or with electricity.

Nice post Naren! I don't think that I would like living as the Amish people. Mostly because they don't use technologies. I play on the computer and wii so I would be bored if I don't have access to those them. But if I didn't like using technologies, I might like to have a similar life style like them.

What an awesome detailed post Naren! The amish are interesting, hardworking, and they use a lot of teamwork so they will stay happy. In a way I would like to live Like the amish but I may not like to live like them too because I may get bored every second. In all Great post!

Amish lifestyles are great. Well, almost great. If there was no technology, there would be no such thing as DS, and no DS, no fun. So Amish people, I'm guessing, don't have fun.

Nice post Naren! I do not want to live like the Amish people because I can't live without a computer and I have to go out of my home when I want to go arrange a playdate or something. Also, traveling to do errands would take a lot of extra time.

Great post Naren! I would like to live a lifestyle simalar to the Amish because peaople get to spend more time with eachother instead of always using electronics. The best reson is that you can learn things you need to grow up like sewing, knitting, & cooking. My last reason is to always be with your family and to run a farm. All in All, I think it would be great to live a lifestyle simalar to the Amish.

What a fantastic huge post! I would like to live the Amish life because it is very simple. Also, it would be fun to ride on a horse powered buggy. It is interesting how Amish adapt to their way of life and have been successfully living for a long time. Their was a slight spelling mistake when you wrote estimatr but everyone makes mistakes. Again, fantastic post Naren!

Well done, Naren! I would like to live a similar life because I would like to ride in a electric buggy. Also, I use the computer a lot, so I can't imagine living without technology. I learned a lot from your post!

Wow, brilliant post Naren! It sounds like you are very interested in the Amish people. I think it would be fun to live like the Amish people because you can ride in electric buggies, but on the other hand, I can not, simply can not, live without the technology we have now. I would say we are one of the most high-tech countries in the world. Any, Amazing post!:o)

I don't really want to live like the Amish because I think they work too hard: working from dawn to dusk, having to work nonstop on the farm feeding and grooming the animals. They have too many siblings: you might continue to fight everyday, get hurt and bullied by your siblings. And most of all, I don't want to go through a whole life with out using electronics, and even if I didn't know what they are, once I hear about it, I'm going to want to use it or see it.

I would not like to live life like the Amish people because there is no electronics, and I can barely live without my video games. Nice post Naren!

I would like to live like a Amish despite the difficulties in their life. It would be interesting to have to get up in the morning and go farming. Also, there will be plenty of horses there! (Julie would like the horses.) Though it would be hard to get by without much technology, we could still survive and live simpler lives.

I would love to live with the Amish, but not for too long. If I could switch lives any time I want. I would join the Amish every summer.
I would be annoyed if I was an Amish is I had to pay taxes. It is supposed be like the old times. I have one question. Is this the essay you were telling us about in Social Studies? Well great post Naren.

Hey Naren,

I just learned that the Amish people were so interesting! I've been looking them up ever since you mentioned them in Social Studies class, but now I have all the facts I need. Thanks!
