Devika's Post

Mumbai
By: Devika

Do you all know where the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionare was shot? .........................In Mumbai, India. Bombay is also another name for Mumbai. Mumbai is the most populous city in the world with about 19 million people in the area. Bombay is the commercial and entertainment centre of India. It is made of 7 islands put together by bridges. People have lived there since the Stone Age. The islands were known as Heptanesia, which is ancient Greek for “a cluster of seven islands.” On April 16th 1853, India’s first passenger train was established, connecting Bombay to the neighboring town of Thane. Also, during the American Civil War , the city of Mumbai became the world’s cotton trading place, and the economy increased, as well as the population. The opening of the Suez Canal made Bombay with one of the largest sea ports on the Arabian Sea.
Mumbai has many dirt roads and a lot of people are out on the streets shopping, or walking. Unfortunately, driving a car is not a very good option because the vehicle is big, so it is harder to stop so people, bicycles, and motorcycles can go to the other side of the road. Some good ways of transportation in Bombay are train, bike, motorcycle, and walking.

Has anyone else ever been there? What things did you see or do while in Mumbai? Isn't it interesting that this is an extremely populated city yet they don't use cars for transportation. Could that ever happen here? What do you think?

I don't think that people would be walking for transportation in America if it was very populated. Yeah, I've been to Mumbai! Even though there aren't a lot of cars in Mumbai there are still some taxis. (Rickshas...I think thats how you spell it...) The only thing I don't like is that its super smoggy!!!!!! #1 Tip: Always bring a gas mask to India if you don't like the smell of smog. No offence to anyone or anything...
