Send A 'Thank You'!The International Festival was today and it was a fabulous success! The students were able to travel to different countries using their very own passports. Once in a new land, they were able to participate in some activities to help them learn more about different cultures. This entire event was put together by parent volunteers. If you happened to visit the festival today, you'd understand how grateful we are to the parents because it looked amazing today. The students and teachers had a blast! Please share some "thanks" to the parent volunteers who took SO much time out of their schedules to make this day possible for you. They will REALLY appreciate your kind and sincere words.

Chapter 5
Why is the title of this chapter, "The Giant Killers," so appropriate? Give two different reasons why. You MUST be specific in your answers. Two sentences is NOT enough. ;0)
Finally, with one or two classmates, prepare a skit for one of the following scenes from the chapter: May Belle brags about her Twinkies and then has them stolen; the "council of war"; or putting the plan into action. Use the book to help with details and dialogue. You will perform these skits on Wednesday.

Be as specific as possible in your answers and make sure to use examples from the book to help "prove" your point. Answer ALL 3 questions in your response. Do not read other comments until you have answered; that way you can be sure to use your own ideas.
Question #1: Several secondary characters are introduced in this chapter. Choose one of them and give adjectives or descriptive phrases that tell about the character.
Questions #2: Why does the word "beautiful" come to mind at the end of this chapter?
Question #3: Based on the outcome of the races and other events of the first day of school, what do you predict will happen with Jess' and Leslie's relationship? Support your prediction with information from the chapter.

At The Movies
By: Katherine
Have any of you ever watched Monsters vs. Aliens...... or 17 Again? Today I just went to watch those two movies with my friend, Stephanie, and the movies were awesome! I couldn't choose which one I liked better, because I liked both. Have you guys ever watched those movies? Or did you only watch one? Did you enjoy it? Which one do you like better?By: Katherine
When you look at the title of Monsters vs. Aliens, which one do you think would be the bad guy..... the monsters...... or the aliens? Did you even imagine that there would be humans in it? Apparently, I didn't, I just thought that there was always a enemy relationship with monsters and aliens and that the monsters never were changed from any human or tomato into a monster. It was a lot more awesome and exciting than that. Here's how it all started: A girl, Susan, that was about to get married got hit by a meteorite and became a monster that was huge and had white hair, but still looked normal. Many people were scared and ran away, but her soon-to-be-husband, Derek, still stuck with her, but Susan got taken by these monster-taker humans. It was hidden, and no one knew about it. Little did Susan know that there were other monsters besides her that were also in this place. Dr. Cockroach, The Missing Link, B.O.B, and Insectosaurus all were monsters, too. Dr. Cockroach used to be a mad scientist (and he still is), but now a cockroach. The Missing Link is a fish-ape hybrid and is good friends with Insectosaurus, who used to be a insect that was one inch, but is now a 350 feet tall, and can shoot silk out of his nose. B.O.B, on the other hand, used to be a tomato, and doesn't have a brain, who is now a bue blob. Gallaxhar, an alien who destroyed it's own planet, wants Susan because she contains , something that Gallaxhar wants, so he sends an alien robot to destroy them and get Susan, but..... I won't tell you the rest, watch it in the movie theatres, 3D!
I also watched 17 Again. My friends all said that it was a wonderful movie, so Stephanies' mom, Stephanie, and I went to watch it right after Monsters vs. Aliens. The main character is Michael O'Donnel, a 37 year-old man, who wants to go back to 17 years old, when his life changed, which is the reason why he wants to so back at that time and change it, so he goes to his high school. This is because Scarlett, his wife, forces him to move in with is geeky best friend. There, he meets his spirit guide, a mysterious janitor, who only Mike can see. The janitor turns him back into his 17 year old self, and is in his best friend's, Ned, a millionare, house, who doesn't recognize him until he sees the photo. There, they recognize that a spirit guide did it, and Mike aka. Michael goes back to his old high school enrolled as Mark Gold, and Ned's son. There, Mike sees his son, Alex, and daughter, Maggie, all facing troubles. He must act like a father and protect him, but with his 17 year old form, how does he do that? Watch 17 Again in theaters!
Believe me, those are the best movies that I have ever watched, and they are awesome! Make sure you watch both of them!

Mother's Day
By:Nikita
On May 10, 2009 was Mother's day. I went to Vasona park. At Vasona park there is a lake, a stream with fish in it, ducks. Canadian geese, boats, kayaks, paddle boats, a train, and a playground. The lawns there are huge!!! Six families, including mine, went there for a mother's day picnic. Two families had dogs named Angel and Comet.I went kayaking there!!! It was my first time, so it was hard at first, but after a while I got the hang of it. I got so close to the geese and I saw two baby swans!! At the bottom of the stream there were shells, they were tiny , though. I collected, with a friend, about 20shells.After a while we had ice cream and the dogs wanted the ice cream. Angel was out of control, but Comet was a good boy and wasn't interested in the ice cream. The moms relaxed half the time. Over all we had a wonderful time.If there was nine kids, and each kid wanted ice cream that cost $2.50, then what is the total cost? What did you do on Mother's day? How did your mom react?

Devika's Post
Mumbai
By: Devika
By: Devika
Do you all know where the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionare was shot? .........................In Mumbai, India. Bombay is also another name for Mumbai. Mumbai is the most populous city in the world with about 19 million people in the area. Bombay is the commercial and entertainment centre of India. It is made of 7 islands put together by bridges. People have lived there since the Stone Age. The islands were known as Heptanesia, which is ancient Greek for “a cluster of seven islands.” On April 16th 1853, India’s first passenger train was established, connecting Bombay to the neighboring town of Thane. Also, during the American Civil War , the city of Mumbai became the world’s cotton trading place, and the economy increased, as well as the population. The opening of the Suez Canal made Bombay with one of the largest sea ports on the Arabian Sea.
Mumbai has many dirt roads and a lot of people are out on the streets shopping, or walking. Unfortunately, driving a car is not a very good option because the vehicle is big, so it is harder to stop so people, bicycles, and motorcycles can go to the other side of the road. Some good ways of transportation in Bombay are train, bike, motorcycle, and walking.
Has anyone else ever been there? What things did you see or do while in Mumbai? Isn't it interesting that this is an extremely populated city yet they don't use cars for transportation. Could that ever happen here? What do you think?

San Jose Sharks
By Kedar
The San Jose Sharks are my favorite team in the National Hockey League (NHL). Ice hockey is played by six players from each team: the goalie, three forwards, and two defensemen. I like ice hockey because it combines two really awesome activities: ice skating and hockey. Ice hockey is very challenging because you must be able to handle the puck, skate, and keep the puck away from the other team at the same time.
The Sharks made it to the playoffs this year after winning the President's Cup. The President's Cup is awarded to the team that has the best regular season record. The regular season is the 82 games between the preseason and postseason. In the playoffs, there are four rounds. The first round, the quarterfinals, semifinals. and the finals. In the first round there are 16 teams (8 from each conference). Half of the teams are eliminated after each round until there is only one team from each conference left. In the playoffs, a team is eliminated once they lose 4 games. The maximum number of games that can be played in a match is 7. Last year, the Sharks beat the Calgary Flames 4 games to 3 in the first round, but then lost to the Dallas Stars 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
This year, the Sharks lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the FIRST ROUND 4-2. First they were losing 2 games to 0, then 2 games to 1, then 3-1, then 3-2, and finally they lost the sixth game 4 goals to 1. A lot of people had high hopes for this year because of the Sharks regular season record, but I guess there is always next year.
What is your favorite sports team if you have one? Why? Do you think the San Jose Sharks will win next year?

Global Warming, Danger for all of us
By: Alicia K.
By: Alicia K.
The earth is polluted! No wonder the temperature are hot these days.We give out too much CO2. Trees suck in CO2 and let out the Oxygen. Unfortunately, we give out too much CO2 and cut down many trees forhouses, paper, land, and etc. Animal's habitat gets broken down. Like in the North Pole, it is too hot in the summer so lot and lots of ice melt. Animals have no place to live.
What are some ways you can do to protect the Earth from polluting and global warming?
