Rohan R.'s Post

The Lunar EclipseBy: Rohan R.
As most of you know, there was an eclipse on December 21 at 9:27 p.m.- 3:06 a.m. It was visible as a total lunar eclipse in North and South America, Iceland, Ireland, Britain and northern Scandinavia. This eclipse was a rare event because it coincided with the winter solstice which is the official beginning of winter. This has not occurred for 372 years. A minor meteor shower sent a few shooting stars through the darkened sky during the height of the eclipse adding to the spectacle. The most interesting part of the eclipse occurred when the Moon plunged into Earth’s full shadow, called the umbra. The Moon turned a deep orange color during the eclipse. As Earth orbits the Sun, it sometimes comes between the Sun and the Moon. When this happens the Earth blocks out some of the sunlight that would normally reach the Moon and creates a shadow which travels across the Moon's surface. This is called a lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse can be partial or total. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when, during the passage of Earth's shadow, the entire Moon is never completely shaded. A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon, just like the one on December 21, 2010. The part of the Moon covered by the Earth's shadow is usually still faintly visible because it is lit by sunlight that has been bent by Earth's atmosphere. This light gives the Moon a reddish glow during the eclipse. The color and brightness of the eclipse depend on the amount of dust in the Earth’s atmosphere. A lunar eclipse can last for more than an hour and only occurs during a full moon. Did you see the lunar eclipse? If you did, what was your experience? If you did not, would you want to see a lunar eclipse and why?

I did not see the lunar eclipse, but I would want to see the lunar eclipse because it is a rare event and I want to experience one rare event myself.

Wonderful post, I would want to see a lunar eclipse. They are so amazing, the red-ish glow. The moons shadow. And adding the shooting stars, what a show! It must be a great experience for those who have seen it. It was a cloudy night at my house, and I needed to go to bed. But my parents saw, they said it was the coolest lunar eclipse that they had ever seen. Just like the one when I was born. Well I must tell you the story( well its not long but its cool!), when I was born, there was a lunar eclipse! My mom said that it looked like a giant pumpkin in the place of the moon! So that is my story, and you learned something about me..
But over all, great post Rohan!

Wow, that is very interesting; I never knew there was a lunar eclipse so recently. I didn't see it, but I would love to see it because it was such a rare event. At first, I thought that the celestial body in the picture was Mars, as it had similar features and a reddish glow.
I just wish I had stayed up late to see the eclipse.

i did not get to see the eclipes, but I saw one of the stages. On the TV I saw that scientists were going to see what shade the moon would become when the eclipes would happen because it would tell them how much polution was in the earth's athmosphere. I would want to see a eclipes because it comes once in a few hundred years and it is something that you will remember in you whole life.

I would like to see a lunar eclipse because I have never seen it before and also because the lunar eclipse is very rare to see I might not even be able to see in my life time. That is why I would like to see a lunar eclipse.

I didn't see the lunar eclipse, but I would want to. It would be a cool story to tell children when I grow up because it only happens once every 372 years! It would of been a cool expierience. I would probably make a lot of wishes when the shooting stars appear. Did you see the lunar eclipse? (Nice Post!)

No, I didn't see the lunar eclipse because I was probably already sleeping. I want to see one because your description was really good. I never knew the moon could turn orange color. Very interesting post, Rohan!! Good job!!

I did not get to see the lunar eclipse although I wanted to. I couldn't see it since I was sleeping when it occurred.I already knew that a eclipse was happening since it was mentioned on the news. If I could see the lunar eclipse, I definitely would. It would be cool to see a red moon. Also, I would be seeing history being made since the lunar eclipse on December 21, 2010
was rare.

Too bad I was sleeping, because I missed the eclipse. However, i did see a solar eclipse at my friend's house in Gilroy. I would like to see a lunar eclipse in the future.

I've never seena lunar eclipse in my whole life before. I've never seen it before and I never want to see it. First of all, my mom told me that if you see it with your bare eyes, you'll get blind. If you're really urged to see a lunar eclipse, you need to wear this special kind of sun glasses.

I didn't see the lunar eclipse. We forgot that it was coming and so we missed it. We were all preparing for Christmas so it sort of pushed it to the back of our heads.

I would want to see a LUNAR ECLIPSE because I have never seen one, and it is supposed to look very cool. It would be a good opportunity to see a LUNAR ECLIPSE because who knows when is the next one.

I saw the Lunar Eclipse. It was very, very cool. I thought when it was visible, I could touch it. It looked 3-D. It was devistating when the clouds covered the Moon, but you could still see
it... barely. My expirence with the Lunar Eclipse was one of the coolest space events in my life.

I did not see the lunar eclipse, but yes, I would like to see one because it would be really interesting to see the moon in a deep orange color, and a reddish glow on the moon sounds like something you'd want to see too. Also, lunar eclipses are pretty rare, so if you've seen one, then it's really awesome. Few people get to see partial and total lunar eclipses. Even seeing one of them is lucky. So, I would really like to be one of these lucky people too.

Sadly, I did not get to see the lunar eclipse. I really wanted to see it though. I think the experience must have been cool. Seeing the Moon in an orange color must have been a little weird though! Seeing a lunar eclipse is really rare, so I would really want to see it! There was also shooting stars! I bet many people wished on them! First having a meteor shower, then a lunar eclipse! Amazing!
