Iceland Volcano
By: Kimberly
Did you hear about the volcano in Iceland? It exploded! The ash went up into the air which stopped planes from flying to America! Even Ms. (Mrs.) McPheeters got to school a day late! The airports canceled all flights. People had to sleep outside on cold concrete with pickpockets roaming around! Can you believe it?!
Are airports doing the right thing by canceling all flights? If you were an airport manager, would you cancel all flights or would you make flights go to one place (say Alaska), then go to America?

I think that the airports are doing the right thing by canceling all the flights because if you were in the air, but ash was blocking the captain's view, then you have a high chance of crashing. I would have done the exact same thing. Good post, Kimberly!
I think airports are doing the right thing by canceling flights. If airlines flew planes around the volcano, they would have to pay a lot of money for the extra gas. If they tried to fly over the volcano, it could be dangerous. The volcano could spit out a rock that might hit an airplane! Then, the plane would be damaged and might crash land into the volcano! If I were airport manager, I would cancel the flights that were going through the volcano. I would do that because I didn't want to loose money and safety always comes first.
I think that canceling the flights is not the right thing to do. If I were the airport manager, I would go to Alaska, and then go back to America, because vacations are supposed to be relaxing. I shouldn't have people sleep on the floor and then have them robbed by pickpockets. When they come back from the vacation, they would regret going on the vacation.
Yes, airports are making the right choice by canceling the flights that are flying in the volcanic eruption zone. If I were the airport manager, I would cancel the flights for a couple of reasons. First, safety matters. Flying ashes can prevent visibility which can lead the plane to go out of control. Second, making all flights go to one place can cause overcrowding. Hotels can purposely increase the price for a room. Travelers are also routed to new places that they have not planned to go to. So, I would cancel the flights and plan the next steps.
I think they are doing the right thing by canceling flights. If they did not cancel the flights it would be dangerous taking a flying. They would be putting you at a risk. I would make it go to one place because you can't be stuck in the airport for a week or more!
I would make flights travel in the other direction so the people could get back home. I would not delay flights because say someone's parents live in America and they can't take care of themselves for a long time, or you are a teacher (like Ms.McPheeters) you're students need you.
Yes, I think airports are doing the right thing by canceling all of the airports. That is because all of the volcanic ash can cause the engine to shut down. Volcanic ash melts at 1,100 degrees Celcius. The engine can go up to 300 degrees hotter than that. So instead of the volcanic ash just going through the engine, it melts and shuts the engine down. When the engine is shut down, the plane eventually will crash. So shutting down the airport is actually saving millions, perhaps billions, of lives. I would still cancel all of the flights. This is because you never know where the volcanic ash can head to. So if you order the airplane to fly to Alaska, the volcanic ash might also fly to Alaska or fly between the route. So to keep everybody safe, I would cancel all of the flights.
The airports are doing the wrong thing by canceling all flights. They should make flight fly to other places, like Africa or Asia, and then fly them to the U.S. (If that is their destination.) That is exactly what I would do if I were the airport manager. I've also heard that another volcano in Iceland might blow its top, too.
I would cancel all flights because the ash might get into the plane's engine and it could crash which would be dangerous. Also, the ash could go to other places.
If I was the airport manager, I would close down the airports, but I would still support the passengers with food and blankets. It will be dangerous if you put airports up in the air after a volcano! But, I would send some of the flights to a place like Africa. There you can go back to America and live with real big coffee!
I think airports are doing the right thing because a plane could crash. When your trip is almost to your destination, the plane could crash land because it can't see where it's landing because of the ash in the air.
I think airports are doing the right thing because with volcanic ash in the air airplane engines jam and can have a crash landing. I would cancel flights but if it was a flight to Asia then I wouldn't cancel it. So if it was a plane going some were away from the cloud I would not cancel it.
I think the airport is doing the right thing because it is dangerous for the airplanes to fly in the air. The air is filled with ashes and we can't see the ashes. It is easy to have a plane crash. I suggest the planes should turn to the side and fly. Then, stop at a place and fly back to the U.S.
I thin I would et some flights open such as from Russia to Maine, because there are many people who urgently need to get back to there destination. Plus, you can just go around the ash cloud so that at least some flights can get to there destination. I would never let a flight from Spain to Georgia, because it goes straight through the ash cloud. At the same time I wouldn't let all flights be canceled.
They are doing the right thing by stopping the flights that are going to some place from Europe. The ash will block the pilot's view and it might clog the engine which could result in crash landing. Thousands of people could lose their lives.
I think that airports are doing the right thing because they want to make sure that the people stay safe, but they shouldn't make people sleep on the floor. Ms.McPheeters said that the hotels raised their prices because there were so many people. I think that the hotels should keep their prices the same because then more people can come. The more people they get the more money they make. I hope that airports don't make any rash ideas like flying over a volcano or let lava fly all over the place, maybe even on the airplane.
